We Effect through Malawi Lake Basin Programme has handed over a warehouse to Mthiramanja Cooperative in Mangochi. The storage facility has been constructed in response to a need of a warehouse for the Cooperative and the surrounding community. The warehouse has been constructed with funding from a Swedish Cooperative known as Lantmannen.
“If you are innovative and wise, you will do even more with this facility. Please remember that our wish in handing over this warehouse is that it will benefit this community at large.” We Effect Country Representative and MLBP Programme Director Sanne Chipeta said adding that a warehouse is a huge asset as it allows farmers to have bargaining power when they pool their commodities collectively.
Speaking on behalf of Mthiramanja Cooperative Nelson Kaliati who is the chair said before the warehouse, they lost out on opportunities because one of the demands from the buyers is to collect the commodities from one place.
“Without the warehouse it was hard to mobilize the commodities and keep them safe. Our attempts would always end up in frustration because the commodities would either end up eaten and destroyed by rats or sometimes, the commodities would be stolen,” he said.
Kaliati said with the warehouse in place they will be able to store safe groundnuts, maize, soy, rice and many more.
